Nursing Instructional Session
What are we doing?
- What we mean when we say scholarly.
- Where to search for scholarly articles on the library website.
- Where to search for your surgical handout resources on the library website.
- And how to get help!
Let's talk about what we mean when we say scholarly.
For your assignment (and generally as a professional), you will need to draw on scholarly sources to stay informed on important topics. But what does that mean?
Let's take a moment to discuss the characteristics of scholarly articles. Who are the authors? What type of language does the author(s) use? How are scholarly articles formatted? Where are they published? Do they cost money to access?
Consider the following examples: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, Example 4. Would you consider any of these scholarly?
It can be difficult to determine if something is "scholarly" and can take some practice! Take advantage of the resources you have available—like your instructors and librarians—to help guide you!

Let's talk about where to search for scholarly articles.
There's a lot of information on the library homepage. What's the first thing you notice on this page? Let's click on the arrows in the image to view a roadmap that will help you make decisions about where to click on this page.
Once you find the right search tool, it's helpful to know how to search efficiently! When using a library search tool, it's very important to only the most important words describing your topic--I call it Hulkspeak, but you can call it whatever you want! The good news is, you already know how to search in a database if you've used a database like Netflix or Hulu before! Click through the arrows on the image below to see an example of what I mean.
Once you have your keywords and you know where you want to start searching, you can type your keywords into your selected database and start working with a results page.
Sometimes you'll find an article--the *perfect* article--but it will have this link rather than a link to the full text. What would you do?
Regardless if we have full text, you'll find a lot of helpful tools available in the library databases. Look for these tools, they are your friends!
Let's talk about where to search for surgical handout resources.

Let's talk about getting help!
This is just scratching the tip of the iceberg when it comes to researching, so if you find yourself getting stumped or forgetting where to click that's totally normal! To help you, the library offers a wide range of services. We'll help even if you're not using library resources, you just have to ask!
