How do you look for sources?
Where do you start searching?
What type of sources are you finding (journals, newspaper, advertisements, etc.)? How do you determine what you'll use and what you'll ignore?
How do you evaluate information? How do you define "scholarly"? Is something like this "scholarly"?

How do I start searching for Barber Library resources?
There's not one search bar to search everything the library has to offer. That is designed to be helpful and keep your search results relevant and manageable. For instance, if you were looking for an article that appeared in the New York Times, you could Google it and find it somewhere in the results among other, non-New York Times sources, or you could go directly to the New York Times website and filter out that other stuff. That's what the library does. Chances are good if you're looking for articles, you don't want books in your results list and vice versa. So we separate them out, meaning you have to select the tool you want to use before you start searching. Where do you find tools on the library website?
How do I access library resources NOT in Bend?
Step One: Choose your library tool you want to search and click the link to open the page.
Step Two: Sign in using your COCC email username (WITHOUT THE @COCC.EDU!) and your COCC email password.

Step Three: Search the database just like you would if you were on campus!
How do I request items?
You have two ways of requesting items:
Via Summit if you're looking for a physical item like a book. Search the Barber Library catalog (the search bar on the homepage) for the title, author, topic, etc.
Via Summit if you're looking for a physical item like a book. Search the Barber Library catalog (the search bar on the homepage) for the title, author, topic, etc.
Find the item you want to check out and click the Get It tab located under the yellow or green dot (circled in the image below). Click the link (next to the arrow in the image below) that says COCC Patrons: Sign-in to request this item.
You'll sign-in on the pop-up page using your COCC email username (WITHOUT THE @COCC.EDU!) and your COCC email password.
You will now see new options on the item record. Click the Request link (circled in the image below).
Select COCC-Redmond (or your preferred campus) and click the orange Request button for the item to be delivered to you! Except delivery to take at least 24 hours. More information about checking out library items is available on this page.
Via Interlibrary Loan if you're looking for an electronic item like an article. When you find something that doesn't have full-text access, you'll still be able to read a summary, and you should find a link that looks like this:
Clicking on that link will actually search in other library databases for your item. If it's located in another database, it will tell you which one to search to find full-text. If it's not located in another database, it will give you the option to "Request from another library." Click this link to request full-text.

If you've never requested an item before, click this link to get directions on creating an account. If you have, sign into your Interlibrary Loan account using your COCC email username (WITHOUT THE @COCC.EDU!) and your COCC email password.
The information needed to request the article will be auto-filled into the form, you'll just need to scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click Submit Request.
You will be notified via your COCC email when the article has been delivered to your Interlibrary Loan account. The email will include a link back to the Interlibrary Loan log in page, where you will log in with your COCC email username (WITHOUT THE @COCC.EDU!) and your COCC email password. Under the Download Received Articles Here section, you will see a PDF icon. Click on the PDF icon to view the article. You can download this article to your computer and keep the file for as long as you need it--no need to return it to the library and it won't disappear. After 30 days it will disappear from your Interlibrary Loan account, but not where you saved it.
Too much? Ask for help!
I know that there's a lot of information here, and you might still have questions, even after this session. That's what librarians are for! You can always contact me, but there are also several other options for you to contact any Barber Library librarian.
From the Help page on the library's website, you'll find ways to connect with someone 24/7--we can help you come up with keywords, cite your sources, choose databases, and with your general library needs!
